Schools in Montemor-o-Novo start composting pilot project

“Biobairros” program is already in action

The schools of Montemor-o-Novo have already started a pilot composting project. In the Secondary School and in the Basic School of São João de Deus, two “composting islands” were installed, consisting of three containers for recycling organic waste.

These containers allow the peels and leftovers of vegetables produced in the canteens of these schools to be previously separated by the employees, who place them in the composter daily. Then, weekly, a team from the municipality carries out monitoring tasks: turning over the waste, checking humidity and temperature, adding dry branches and leaves, among others.

The preparation of this project relied on the experience and data collected at the Escola de São Mateus where, for several years, the school canteen waste has been composted. Now, the objective is «to demonstrate the possibility of reproducing this solution in the two largest school canteens in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo».

The composting initiative is a pilot action included in the Biobairros Program – From Earth to Earth, which, according to the municipality, has the objective of valuing organic matter (peels, fruit and vegetable remains, leaves, herbs, grass, etc.).
