student of Faro wins gold medal in Portuguese Mathematics Olympiads

The winners of categories A and B may also join the delegations that will represent Portugal in international competitions

Eduardo Guerreiro, student of the 12th D of the João de Deus School Group (Faro), won the gold medal in Category B (10th, 11th and 12th grade) at the XL Portuguese Mathematical Olympiads (OPM) that ended this Sunday, April 10, in Caldas da Rainha. 

The event was attended by Conceição Henriques, councilor of the Municipality of Caldas da Rainha, Hélder Pais, the General Directorate of Education, Ana Noronha, Ciência Viva, Jorge Milhazes de Freitas, vice-president of the Portuguese Society of Mathematics, by João Silva, director of the Raul Proença School Group, the test correction team and the several dozen participating students.

To hand over the medals, Osvaldo Mendes, from Novo Banco, one of the oldest supporters of the OPM, joined forces.

The Portuguese Mathematical Olympiads are divided into three categories: Junior category (6th and 7th years), A category (8th and 9th years) and B category (10th, 11th and 12th. th year). Each category, which has a total of 30 students, awards three gold, three silver and six
bronze.

The winners of categories A and B will also be able to join the delegations that will represent Portugal in international competitions after attending internships in the Delphi project, at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra. The International Mathematical Olympiads will take place in Norway in July, the CPLP Olympics in Mozambique in September, and the Ibero-American Mathematics Olympiads will be held in Colombia on a date to be announced.

The Portuguese Mathematics Olympiads are organized by the Portuguese Mathematics Society in partnership with the Mathematics Department of the University of Coimbra, and have the support of the Ministry of Education, Ciência Viva, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Novo Banco, Texas Instruments and from Happy Code.

In November of this school year, Eduardo Guerreiro had already obtained the Silver Medal in the XLV São Paulo Mathematics Olympiad.
