Augusto Santos Silva elected president of the Assembly of the Republic

In his first speech, Augusto Santos Silva promised an “impartial, contained and unifying” presidency.

The socialist Augusto Santos Silva was elected this Tuesday, March 29, as the new president of the Assembly of the Republic, becoming the second figure in the State.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs collected 156 votes in favor and there were 63 blank votes and 11 null votes.

In total, 230 deputies participated in the vote.

The vote was marked by an unusual moment due to the fact that the list of names was not updated.

Each deputy was called by name to confirm that he had actually voted.

In his first speech, Augusto Santos Silva, who succeeds Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, promised an “impartial, contained and unifying” presidency.
