VRSA celebrates 120th anniversary of Master Manuel Cabanas

Born in Vila Nova de Cacela, where he was born in 1902, Manuel Cabanas was a man of struggle

Vila Real de Santo António will mark, this Friday, February 11, the 120th birthday of Master Manuel Cabanas, with a pilgrimage to his grave, in Cacela Velha.

This celebration will take place at 11:00 am and also includes the laying of a wreath and a brief musical note.

A high-quality woodcutter, defender of democracy and resistant to the oppressive regime of the Estado Novo, Manuel Cabanas «knew, from an early age, to exercise his citizenship in favor of freedoms and human dignity», recalls the VRSA Chamber.

Born in Vila Nova de Cacela, where he was born in 1902, Manuel Cabanas was a man of struggle who stood out for his intense artistic activity in the field of drawing and wood engraving, having been decorated by the Grand Cross of the Ordem da Liberdade, in the degree of Commander, by the then President of the Republic General Ramalho Eanes.

In 1991, he was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by the President of the Republic Mário Soares. He died in 1995.
