São Brás de Alportel celebrates the 153rd anniversary of the birth of Gago Coutinho

Celebrations last until the end of the year.

The 153rd anniversary of the birth of Gago Coutinho, who, together with Sacadura Cabral, made history by starring in the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic, will begin to be celebrated on Thursday, the 17th, in São Brás de Alportel, municipality with the which this aviator had strong family relationships.

This first moment of celebration, which takes place next to the artistic replica of the seaplane “Santa Cruz, by Carlos de Oliveira Correia, consists of the unveiling of an official plaque for the commemorations, a lecture and the inauguration of the traveling exhibition “1st Aerial Crossing of the Atlantic South”, which will be on display until February 27 in the atrium of the Covered Municipal Swimming Pools.

This exhibition, which will open at 17:00 pm, was prepared by the Naval Aeronautical Commission for the Commemorations of the Centenary of the Air Crossing of the South Atlantic (100TAAS).

Until the end of the year, the public can still count on «musical, artistic, literary, children and youth moments, among others», according to the São Brás de Alportel Chamber.

On the 27th of February, the Nature Walk Cycle will introduce the “Rota Gago Coutinho – Geodesy in São Brás de Alportel”, «a route through the 14 geodesic landmarks of the São Brasense territory, which has recently been requalified».

The entire program, which will run until December, aims to «celebrate the determination, perseverance and mastery of Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral and the unique way in which they marked the history of aviation and the world».
