The infection by Xylella fastidiosa detected in the parish of Luz e Santo Estêvão, in Tavira, did not expand beyond the area where this quarantine bacteria was initially detected, which has already made it possible to reduce the buffer zone that was created, announced the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Algarve. .

As soon as the presence of the bacteria was confirmed Xylella fastidiosa in a rosemary sample, collected in the parish of Luz de Tavira and Santo Estevão, municipality of Tavira, DRAPAlg and the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary established a safety zone of 2,5 kilometers around the infected area.

This precaution is due to the fact that this pest can affect crops of high commercial value, namely citrus and grapes.

At the same time, measures were put in place that 'included the immediate sampling and destruction, after carrying out an adequate treatment against the population of potential vector insects, of the plants covered by the infected zone and the buffer zone, in accordance with a statistically justified plan and risk-based, and intensive prospecting, with sampling and testing of potential insect vectors of the bacteria».

'The new official laboratory analyzes carried out on the samples taken did not detect the presence of Xylella fastidiosa in any other plant or insect, so it was possible to conclude, with a high degree of confidence, that the initial presence of the bacterium did not give rise to its further dispersion", according to DRAPAlg.

“As a result, DGAV has recently published Order No. 12/G/2022, which determines the update of the demarcated zone to Xylella fastidiosa, reducing the width of the buffer zone to one kilometer around the infected area, in the parish of Luz de Tavira and Santo Estevão, in the municipality of Tavira», concludes the same entity.
