PS points to «offer of affordable housing» as a pillar of economic development in the Algarve

Jamila Madeira stressed that the Government has so far approved 3.322 affordable housing for the Algarve.

Jamila Madeira, PS candidate for the legislative elections on 30 January, underlined that the Government has already approved, so far, 3.322 affordable housing for the Algarve.

The guarantee was given by the candidate during a visit to the works of two housing blocks that are currently underway in Lagos, in the parish of Bensafrim.

According to PS Algarve, the visit took place within the scope of the local housing strategy, agreed between the Municipality of Lagos and the Government, to "underline the socialists' commitment to creating an offer of affordable housing for families in the media and for young people".

«The economic development model that we advocate for the Algarve requires us to build affordable housing for our young people, for the workers we need in the region, for families with intermediate incomes», said Jamila Madeira.

According to PS, «the municipalities of the Algarve and the Government have already contracted, so far, the construction of 3.322 affordable housing».

The Socialist Party candidate also stressed that “the real estate market responds to tourists, but it does not respond to those who live and work here and it is for them that we have to build houses”.

The PS emphasizes that, so far, the Government “has already agreed with the Municipal Councils of the Algarve, an investment in housing worth 203 million euros”.

“91 million in non-refundable funds and 112 million in subsidized interest so that municipalities can place affordable housing on the market for young people and families who depend on their income from work”.

For the head of the list of the Socialist Party in the Algarve, «without housing we do not have a dignified life».

Jamila Madeira stressed that tourism causes a very significant increase in the price of housing, which is why many families are unable to acquire or rent a house.

“Contrary to what the right promises, the private market cannot solve the problem of real estate speculation. That is why the Government of António Costa has launched, in partnership with the municipalities, this great housing program with thousands of affordable homes for young people and working families in the Algarve», concluded Jamila Madeira.
