Covid-19: Most internees are not vaccinated

"This is the best indicator to make this call for vaccination", maintained Lacerda Sales

The Deputy Secretary of State and Health said this Monday, January 3, that almost 90% of hospitalized patients with Covid-19 in intensive care did not receive the vaccine, having reinforced the call for people to get vaccinated.

António Lacerda Sales also indicated that about 60% of those admitted to the wards of national hospitals were also not vaccinated.

The official was speaking to journalists in Coimbra, on the sidelines of the reception ceremony for the intern doctors of the Hospital and University Center of Coimbra (CHUC).

"This is the best indicator to make this call for vaccination", maintained Lacerda Sales, then comparing the current numbers with those of a year ago.

Currently, there are "less than a third in conventional admissions, less than a quarter in intensive care units and, fortunately, less than a fifth in terms of deaths", he listed.

The government official also called for testing, another way of isolating and fighting the pandemic, and highlighted the country's capacity for testing the covid-19, through more than 1.400 participating pharmacies and 700 test laboratory posts.

Stressing that Portugal is the fourth European country with more tests carried out, more than 26 million to date, Lacerda Sales emphasized that on Thursday, December 30th alone, more than 400 thousand tests were carried out.

"We have testing capacity, we have tests, many institutions to test, so we want people to test themselves, because it is very important for us to control these health crises," he said.

The Deputy Secretary of State and Health also appealed to the population not to go to hospitals and emergencies to carry out covid-19 tests, "because having this capacity for testing in other places can free up time for health professionals for more serious situations" .
