CDU demands that community funds be used to diversify economic activity in the Algarve

Sandra Pereira, MP for the PCP in the European Parliament, joined the CDU campaign in the Algarve

Sandra Pereira, MP for the PCP in the European Parliament, joined the CDU campaign in the Algarve on Saturday, the 22nd, and, alongside Catarina Marques and other CDU candidates and activists, participated in various actions throughout the day at the counties of Faro and from Loulé.

In the morning, with a visit to the Loulé Market and a contact action with workers and taxi drivers at the Faro, and in the afternoon with visits to Refúgio Aboim Ascensão and Casa da Rapariga, two important institutions with social intervention in the region, the CDU delegation contacted different realities, listened to experiences and problems, and presented solutions and proposals for the region and for the Parents.

The CDU took advantage of the presence of deputy Sandra Pereira in the region to demand, once again, that "community funds be placed at the service of regional development, instead of being diverted to feed the profits of economic groups and deepen a model of economic development based on tourism monoactivity, low wages and precariousness».

The CDU recalled that “important investments that the region has long demanded are not considered in the Recovery and Resilience Plan, nor in any other instrument for programming and executing public investment”. Which means that, if there is no reversal of policies, investments like the Hospital Central do Algarve will not be built in the next 10 years.

As Catarina Marques underlined, «the State Budget practically no longer finances public investment in the region, which became totally dependent on community funds. This is a wrong option. It is necessary to increase public investment to at least 5% of the value of GDP. It is necessary to invest in public services, in social facilities such as daycare centers and homes, in the railway and in a real public transport network, substantially expanding the offer».

In addition, considers the communist candidate, «the Algarve needs to invest in the diversification of its economic activity. Requalify ports and bars, promote dredging, activate structures of the central administration to support agriculture and the forest, promote the construction of public housing, rehabilitation and conservation of cultural and environmental heritage».
