Left Block wants programs thinking about homeless people in the Algarve

José Gusmão visited CASA

The reinforcement of public housing and the commitment to programs that allow "to solve the serious and growing problem of homeless people or with houses in an extremely precarious situation in the Algarve" were measures defended this Thursday, the 20th, by José Gusmão, head of Left Bloc list by the constituency of the District of Faro to the Legislative Assembly of 30 January, on the sidelines of a visit to the Homeless Support Center (CASA).

The blockist candidate defended “the importance of public housing and “housing first” programs”, but also the urgency of the existence of a network of homes, in the case of elderly people who do not have a home or live in very precarious conditions, according to the BE.

In his visit to the Homeless Support Center (CASA), José Gusmão “was able to confirm the seriousness of the situation and the impact of the pandemic, which dramatically increased the number of families that resort to that support. This increase puts under pressure that institution that, despite the increase in the number of volunteers, works in limited facilities for the increase in requirements. The priority for the Center would be to be able to add the possibility of providing laundry services, for which it currently does not have the logistical conditions».

In addition to the answers «which are based on a public housing stock that lowers rents in the Algarve rental market, the second most expensive in the country, and on a network of homes and home support services for the elderly that put an end to the huge lists of waiting that are currently taking place», José Gusmão also underlined the importance «of changing the economic model of the Algarve, based on strong seasonality and the preponderance of fixed-term contracts that every winter throw thousands of people into unemployment».
