Left Block is against construction of the Matos da Picota “dumpster”

Head of the list of blockers met with the newly created Association of Residents and Friends of Picota de Loulé

José Gusmão, head of the Left Bloc's list, demonstrated this Sunday, January 23, against the construction of the Waste Treatment Center in Matos da Picota (Loulé).

The candidate met with the newly created Association of Residents and Friends of Picota de Loulé, where he spoke out against the process.

In a press release, BE talks about the "way in which the company, in its candidacy, presented a capacity of 49 tons slightly below the legal minimum limit for the mandatory Environmental Impact Assessment (50 tons), in a shameless attempt to circumvent consideration of the high environmental risks involved'.

On the other hand, defend the blockers, «there was not, either on the part of the Portuguese Environment Agency, or on the part of the guardianship, the smallest effort to involve the local community, neither in terms of information, nor in terms of participation, having the whole process was conducted in absolute secrecy».

«It was only thanks to the Residents' Association that the process became known and it was through the intervention of the municipal deputy from the Left Bloc Carlos Martins that the matter was taken to the Municipal Assembly, which unanimously pronounced itself in favor of suspending the PDM, with the objective of halting the process", he adds.

José Gusmão defended that the «impacts of these businesses, because that is what it is all about, have to be fairly distributed across the country, with environmental and social guarantees that the project in question is not able to ensure in that location».
