AMAL approves package of measures of 2 million of the PRR to reduce water losses

This funding takes the form of a non-refundable grant, with 100% of eligible expenses through the Next Generation EU fund.

AMAL – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve approved this Monday, 24 January, a first package of applications, within the scope of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), in the amount of 2 million euros, which aim to reduce water losses in the supply networks.

These first seven projects received the green light within four months – from the process started to the approval of the projects, at yesterday’s meeting – «and represent an investment of around 2 million euros that will allow the implementation of 72 Zones of Measurement and Control and the creation of 42 Controlled Pressure Zones, with a view to reducing real water losses in the Algarve region», says AMAL.

The process began in September last year, when AMAL contracted with the Mission Structure “Recover Portugal” to grant financial support for the “Regional Plan for Water Efficiency in the Algarve”, within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

One of the measures envisaged in this plan, “SM1 – Reducing water losses in the urban sector”, has a total value of 35 million euros and is intended to reduce the level of real water losses in low-water supply networks.

Also during the month of September, the 1st notice was launched for the presentation of candidacies, of which 26 were submitted, with a total planned investment of 19,6 million euros. In these last four months, the Intermunicipal Community has analyzed all the applications and the 1st package of seven has now been approved.

This funding takes the form of a non-reimbursable grant, with 100% of eligible expenses through the Next Generation EU fund.

The PRR Management Committee is made up of António Pina, president of AMAL, Pedro Coelho, director of the Administration of the Algarve Hydrographic Region, and José Paulo Patrício Geraldes Monteiro, representative of the University of Algarve.
