Alvor marks World Wetlands Day with sand cleaning and a walk along the ria

Alvor will once again mark the World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated this Wednesday, February 2nd, with several initiatives, including the removal of weeping willows from the beaches, a cleaning of the sand and a walk in the Ria de Alvor .

Taking place since 2017, the Bemposta Schools Group will mark the anniversary with the removal of the weevil from the beaches in the Ria de Alvor dunes by two classes from the EB 2,3 Francisco Sobral, from Mexilhoeira Grande, on the 2nd. of February, and three classes of EB 2,3 from Bemposta, on the 11th.

The beach weeper (carpobrotus edulis) is «an exotic plant with invasive and weed behavior, constituting one of the main environmental threats associated with habitat degradation», says the municipality of Portimão.

In 2022, the date is also marked by Associação Teia d' Impulsos, which will clean the sand at the fishing port of Alvor, with two groups from EB 2,3 Júdice Fialho, on February 2, and with two groups from EB 2,3 Nuno Mergulhão, on the 4th.

On the 5th of February, A Rocha, an organization linked to environmental conservation, will promote a walk in the Ria de Alvor, with the support of the Parish Council of Mexilhoeira Grande.

Participation is free (limited to 20 people), but with mandatory registration until the 4th, through email contacts [email protected] ou [email protected].

This guided tour will start at 9:00 am, with a meeting point at the Mexilhoeira Grande railway station.

World Wetlands Day marks the “date on which the treaty on the conservation and rational use of wetlands of international importance, particularly as habitat for waterfowl, was agreed on 2 February 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar”. .

«In 1996, within the scope of this treaty, the Ria de Alvor was designated by the Portuguese Government as a Ramsar site, constituting one of the 31 wetlands with this status in Portugal», concludes the Portimão municipality.
