Faro: João de Deus Group receives Honorable Mention at the Casa das Ciências Awards

Award distinguished the best educational resources and images submitted by its members to the portal during the year 2020

The EB 2,3 School of S. António, from the João de Deus Group, in Faro, announced this Wednesday, December 14, that it was distinguished by the Casa das Ciências with an Honorable Mention, in the category of “Best Educational Resource”, with the set of materials associated with the “Secret Message” activity.

This Casa das Ciências award distinguished the best educational resources and images submitted by its members to the portal during 2020.

The award-winning activity was promoted by Professor Anabela Student, in Mathematics classes taught by Professor Carla Peres, in two 5th grade classes, at Escola EB 2,3 de S. António, in order to mark the International Mathematics Day.

The ceremony was attended by João Lourenço, former student of the Group and co-author of this educational resource, and teacher Anabela Student, coordinator of the Programming and Robotics Club (CPR) and professor of Physics and Chemistry.

«Reflecting on the enthusiastic way in which the students got involved in the challenges launched and with the purpose of providing a greater number of students and AEJD teachers, the objectives of creating secret messages were established through a more expeditious process and construction of a game of deciphering secret messages», says the group.

After achieving these objectives, and considering that the materials prepared could be relevant to other teachers, the AEJD proceeded to submit the project to the Casa das Ciências.

This resource was made available on the Casa das Ciências portal "after a scientific and didactic evaluation that gave it a validation of total credibility and security".

The two applications websites, in the form of a website, developed for the production of the "Secret Message" and for the development of the activity in classes online, «a deciphering game for students, a teacher's sheet with a suggestion for the development of the activity and thirty secret messages in the field of Mathematics» are available free of charge for use or adaptation.

The quality of this resource was also recognized by the editors of the online magazine science in school, published by European Intergovernmental Research Organization (EUROforum), in which a English version of the digital resources.
