Portugal registers 34 cases associated with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, all asymptomatic or with mild symptoms of covid-19, indicating the “red lines” of the pandemic, released this Friday, 3 December.

“With regard to the Omicron variant, a total of 34 cases have been identified. These include the cases sequenced for the Omicron variant and the cases in which specific mutations, strong predictors of the Omicron variant, were identified. At the moment, these cases have been asymptomatic or have had mild symptoms, with no hospitalizations or deaths”, adds the risk analysis of the pandemic.

According to the weekly report of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), 30 confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection related to the outbreak of Belenenses SAD were identified. which 28 cases were sequenced or are strong predictors of the Omicron variant (through the identification of specific mutations), and two cases are still awaiting the result regarding the identification of the variant.

«Still in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, a strong predictor case of the Ómicron variant was identified, with a history of recent travel to South Africa», while in the Center region, seven confirmed cases of infection by SARS-CoV-2, of which "five cases are strong predictors of the Omicron variant, and two cases are awaiting the result regarding the identification of the variant", the document goes on.

According to the INSA, the investigation of samples associated with suspected cases (defined by epidemiological or laboratory criteria) is carried out through the PCR-directed search for “marker” mutations of this variant of concern, which “constitutes a rapid and efficient approach. potential high predictive value'.

According to the “red lines”, the epidemiological situation of the Omicron variant is still under evolution and investigation.
