The maximum ceiling of €40 for monthly passes for public road transport ends

Fixing a maximum value of 40 euros in the value of the pass has generated, in the last two years, especially in railways, an increase in the sale of passes at higher levels

The implementation of the Public Transport Tariff Reduction Support Program (PART) has undergone changes for 2022. The discount on public transport tariffs is maintained, but with changes in the maximum value of passes, at the level of road transport, the Community announced today Intermunicipal of the Algarve (AMAL).

This Program, created in 2019, aims to attract passengers to public transport, encouraging the general population to adopt more sustainable mobility habits and supporting transport authorities with an annual budget, which allows them to carry out a careful adjustment of tariffs and supply, with a total value of around 1,4 million euros. This financial support comes from the Environmental Fund and the Municipalities, adds AMAL.

For 2022, changes were recently approved with regard to road transport. For this transport, there is no longer the maximum ceiling of 40 euros for monthly passes, similarly to what has happened since May 2021, in rail transport, with passengers maintaining the benefit of a 50% discount applied by AMAL, in in relation to the total price of the pass.

This change was approved, since the fixing of a maximum value of 40 euros in the value of the pass has generated, in the last two years, especially in railways, an increase in the sale of passes at higher levels. This situation conditioned the total financing, to the transport operators, of the approved tariff discounts.

AMAL emphasizes that «the implementation of this program is only possible with funding from the central and local administrations, which guarantee the success of the measure, reducing travel costs and taking an important step in environmental terms, reducing cars on public roads and levels of air pollution'.

To improve the quality of life and mobility in the Algarve region, AMAL is also already working on other solutions, namely the introduction of a single pass that will allow residents and visitors to use public transport in the Region through a single transport ticket.

This is a measure that, believes AMAL, «could contribute to the migration from individual transport to public transport for daily commuting in the Algarve».

It is anticipated that this measure can be implemented during the year 2022.
