Secondary Gil Eanes literacy project wins Escola Amiga award

The Writing and Image Literacy Project “Poetry and Philosophy: “Flying on the Wings of a Flock of Poets”, by students from Escola Secundária Gil Eanes, in Lagos, was the winner in the “Literacy” category of the Escola Amiga competition.

As a prize, the library of this school will receive 1000 euros in books from the publisher LeYa, as well as offers from other partners in the initiative.

This project «was born with the objective of being a space of freedom and creation, showing that young students are not at school only to receive theoretical knowledge, but also for the pleasure and pleasure of creating, individually or in groups, doing what they really are. they like it and it has meaning for them», according to those responsible for Escola Amiga da Criança, an initiative of the National Confederation of Parents' Associations), by LeYa and psychologist Eduardo Sá.

Over three years, students from the arts course at the Gil Eanes Schools Group built this project.

“Beginning in the 10th grade and ending in the 12th grade, in the scope of the Philosophy subject, whose teacher, realizing the potential of the students, launched the challenge to conceive poems on different themes, many of them freely chosen. As they are art students, the teacher proposed to the authors of the poems that they also create the respective illustrations», he describes.

Sufficient material was collected for the publication of a volume (book), «as a way of giving body and meaning to all the commitment, effort and dedication of the young students, making it evident that the effort pays off and in this way motivates them for future projects in who might become involved'.

"During the pandemic period, marked by the long confinement and isolation of students from the school and the community in general, this project contributed to the maintenance of their mental/psychological health by linking and maintaining the commitments made, as well as emotional freedom and space of subjectivity that creative/poetic writing provides, combined with the artistic expression of drawing and painting that make up this project», adds Escola Amiga.

In this project, the family also played «a very active role in creating and maintaining the conditions essential to the work of students, providing tranquility, dialogue and motivation, without which the quality of the work developed would be compromised. The Municipality of Lagos, through the education and culture department, also immediately showed itself receptive to the support of this project inserted in a broader scale of the School's relationship with the Community.

The 4th edition of Escola Amiga had the support of Católica Porto Business School, Faculty of Education and Psychology | Portuguese Catholic University, Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon, Fábrica Centro Ciência Viva, University of Aveiro, Ciência Viva, The Inventors, Altice Foundation, ACEGIS Association, Ekui, Ponto Verde Academy, Montepio Mutualist Association, Maped, note!, Clube de LeYtura and REN.

This edition has the institutional support of the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transition, the Ministry of Health and the National Health Service, the Ministry of the Sea and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action.
