President of the Republic sets Legislative Elections for January 30th and dissolves parliament

The President of the Republic announced this evening that he will dissolve the parliament and schedule early Legislative Elections for January 30th.

"A week and a day after the rejection of the 2022 Budget, I am in a position to inform you that I have decided to dissolve the Assembly of the Republic and call elections for January 30, 2022", said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a communication to the country, from the Belém Palace in Lisbon.

The dissolution of the Parliament must be decreed on December 1st, since, according to the Constitution, the anticipated legislatives have to take place in the following 60 days.

However, according to this calendar, the deadline for submitting lists of deputies will be 20 December, while the electoral campaign will run from 16 to 28 January.
