The Quercus 2021 Award was awarded this Sunday, 31 October, to Professor Jorge Paiva, "in recognition of his scientific work, in the dissemination and defense of our native forest and biodiversity".
Jorge Américo Rodrigues de Paiva was born in Cambondo (Angola) in 1933, has a degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Coimbra and a PhD in Biology from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the University of Vigo (Spain).
Principal researcher at the Botany Department of the University of Coimbra, where he taught some subjects, he also taught, as a guest professor, at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra, at the Biology Departments of the Universities of Aveiro and Madeira, at the degree in Landscape Architecture at University Vasco da Gama of Coimbra, in the Department of Environmental Engineering of the Superior Institute of Technology of Viseu and in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the University of Vigo (Spain).
In his scientific work, the identification and classification of new botanical species stands out, as well as the carrying out of botanical explorations in several countries in Europe, Africa and even Azerbaijan (Central Asia) and Brazil.
Currently retired, his work continues through numerous articles in the media (namely in the Sul Informação), public interventions and promotion of activities. Recognized environmentalist, particularly in the defense of our native forest and biodiversity, he is an active member of several national and international associations and commissions.
Created in 2004, the Quercus Award has as its main objective to distinguish entities, companies or citizens that stand out as defenders of the environment and promoters of sustainable development in Portugal or anywhere in the world.
