Algarve municipalities support candidacy of Faro the European Capital of Culture with 5,4 million

The investment is expected to take place between 2023 and 2028

The Algarve municipalities will support the candidacy of Faro the European Capital of Culture, with 5,4 million euros, after approval, on the 5th of November, of a manifestation of collective interest at a meeting of the Intermunicipal Council of AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community. 

The Municipality of Faro it will invest 10,6 million euros and the remaining amount will be distributed among the other 15 municipalities, according to a distribution criterion to be established. The investment is expected to take place between 2023 and 2028.

The total estimated budget, which amounts to 76 million euros, will also be provided by the Government, European funds and the private sector.

“It is important to emphasize that the unanimous decision took into account the fact that the investment was directed towards programs to build regional capacity; to enhance the regional cultural fabric, offering training and opportunities for internationalization with access to new partnerships and networks and to bring an increase in the number of visitors, accompanied by the increase in the notoriety of the Algarve destination among new audiences», says AMAL.

In November 2019, when signing the Collaboration Agreements between the Municipality of Faro and the Algarve Intermunicipal Community, the Algarve Tourism Region and the Algarve University, the municipalities of the region agreed that the European Capital of Culture justified the involvement and commitment of all.
