Mother Earth launches the “Planta uma Escola” program to promote environmental preservation and educate for eco-citizenship

The Bemposta Basic and Secondary School, in Portimão, promotes, on November 23, a tree planting action as part of the Mother Earth Association's “Planta uma Escola” program. The initiative is supported by the Municipality of Portimão and by the Elaine Bain Family Trust (EBFT).

“Planta uma Escola” is a national program of Mother Earth – Association for the Preservation of the Environment. implemented by regional centers, which offer trees to schools and promote their planting by the school community, with the aim not only of improving the School's environmental environment and its sustainability, but mainly to awaken young people to the advantages and benefits of trees in the current climate context, and in general to the need for environmental preservation.

"The planting of trees and improvement of the school environment, being concrete actions developed by the students and by the entire educational community, will provide them with awareness that simple individual attitudes can, as a whole, improve the global environment." explains Mother Earth's Algarve Nucleus.

"It is intended to reinforce this direct experience, carrying out, over the subsequent academic year(s), a set of activities that aim to awaken students to environmental issues in general and to the goals of sustainable development, promoting environmental citizenship, especially in the current context of global warming», he adds.

The objective is “to raise awareness and educate young people about the importance of the native forest in the preservation of ecosystems in our country and on the planet”.

Students are challenged to take part in the defense of the environment and to have an active participation in community decision-making processes, contributing to a greater awareness of the importance of the environment in the daily life of their personal, family and community.

This program is taking place simultaneously in schools in Setúbal, Penafiel and Vila Nova de Cerveira. Any school wishing to participate should contact the association via email [email protected] .
