A 2nd generation biplane angiograph, equipment that will allow the treatment, in the Algarve, of patients who have had a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), without the need for transport to Lisbon, began to be installed this Friday, November 12th, at the Hospital of Faro.

"This is a huge step for the Algarve region that will not only allow for a response in these areas, but will also improve the results in the quality of life of patients", began by saying Paulo Neves, executive member of the Board of Directors of CHUA, during the session of the launch of the health literacy project “A Insulina Sai à Rua” which took place yesterday, at the Regional Coordination and Development Commission of the Algarve, in Faro.

The biplane angiograph, equipment that the University Hospital Center of the Algarve needed "since we have cardiology", will make it possible to treat patients who, for example, have had a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and in which it is necessary to unblock the affected vessel.

With the installation of this device, «this work can be done in Faro» with an «immediate reduction in transport time» that was spent between the Algarve and Lisbon, either by ambulance (three hours) or by helicopter (hour and a half). “This issue makes all the difference in an area as sensitive as this one, because time here, for patients, is everything”, he stressed.

Paulo Neves also told journalists, on the sidelines of the session, that CHUA is making "the medical community know" about the existence of this new equipment, "there are already emerging doctors interested in coming to work in the Algarve region" .

«Having the biplane angiograph working, and being the latest generation, we will attract more doctors for the University Hospital Center of the Algarve», considered the member of the Board of Directors of CHUA.

For the rest, the Hospital of Faro he has already got a new radiologist and a vascular surgery professional as well, "something we didn't have and now we can count on it".

With the training of hospital services with this equipment, and with «the excellent team, nationwide, that we have in neurosurgery», CHUA «has everything that is needed, not only to treat patients, but also to help them return to normality», concluded Paulo Neves.

This equipment, financed by the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, was one of the gifts that the University Hospital Center of the Algarve received on its fourth anniversary, in a ceremony attended by António Lacerda Sales, Deputy Secretary of State and Health.
