Fenprof asks for the mask to return to schools and teachers in the priority group for vaccination

National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) calls for the new measures to "don't forget about schools and their professionals"

The return to the use of masks in all areas of the school and considering teachers as a priority group in the vaccination process are measures that Fenprof asks the Government to approve in the Council of Ministers on Thursday.

On the eve of the government meeting in which new actions will be decided to contain the spread of covid-19, the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof) calls for the measures to "don't forget the schools or their professionals".

Within the scope of the reinforcement plan of the third dose of the vaccine against Covid-19, Fenprof asks the Government to return to considering teachers "as a priority group in the vaccination process".

Teachers and non-teaching workers began to be vaccinated at the end of March, having been considered as one of the priority groups in the vaccination process. The plan started with pre-school and 1st cycle workers, followed by the remaining levels of education up to secondary.

After several studies recommend a booster dose of the vaccine to compensate for the loss of immunity that occurs over time, national health authorities have come up with a new plan for taking a third dose.

Currently, among the priority groups are people over 65, health professionals, workers and users of nursing homes or similar spaces and firefighters who man up ambulances.

For Fenprof, among the priority groups should also be teachers, because they deal daily with hundreds of children and young people, who are currently the ones with the highest levels of transmission of the virus.

In a statement, Fenprof also points out as a measure that it wants to see approved by the Council of Ministers the «strengthening of health safety conditions in schools, namely the use of masks in all spaces, measurement of body temperature and the guarantee of physical distance in schools. classrooms".

On October 1st, the use of masks in open-air school spaces, such as playgrounds, was no longer mandatory, although it remained mandatory in classrooms.

The third measure is testing all professionals who work with classes in which cases of covid-19 are identified, as well as periodic testing by the school community.

According to Fenprof, there are teachers with several classes who are not being tested, "with the justification of being vaccinated".

"As we know, the vaccine does not prevent contagion and how teachers deal with many people (students from various classes, colleagues, non-teaching school workers, parents and guardians, and even their own family and friends) is necessary that they be considered in the scope of the measures to be adopted”, stresses the federation.

At the meeting of the Council of Ministers on Thursday, Fenprof hopes that there will also be an announcement of measures aimed at “schools and their professionals, especially as the age groups in which the levels of transferability are higher are, precisely, those of school-age children and young people».

The representative federation of teachers also recalls that «practically all over the country, there are classes in isolation, with thousands of students returning to the undesirable distance learning regime, as a measure of recourse».
