«With some nostalgia for the hustle and bustle that the industrial activity caused in Olhão in the past, it is certain that history is still very much alive, both through the factories that are still in operation today, as well as the memory of all those who saw their lives linked to this industry », adds the municipality.

This exhibition produced by the Municipal Archive of Olhão aims to celebrate an industry that "has been part of the life and memory of the people of Olhão for over a century."

«Not knowing, for sure, the exact date of foundation of the first factory, the French Éstablissments F. Delory being generally identified as the first, it is known, however, that in the Industrial Survey of 1881 there was still no factory, and that in the documentation kept by the Municipal Archives the name of Frederico Delory was identified, for the first time, in the minutes of the session of the Chamber of 13 February 1884, where a request was made for the tenement of a land “next to the beach. west”, he adds.

Later, «on January 5, 1887, there is a reference to “Armand Haüet, director of the Delory factory for canning sardines”, located on Levante beach».
