Covid-19: Costa calls new meeting on epidemiological situation for Friday

Meeting is scheduled for 15:00 pm

Prime Minister António Costa called for this Friday, November 19, a meeting on the evolution of the epidemiological situation of covid-19 in Portugal, bringing together specialists and politicians at Infarmed, in Lisbon, a source in the executive told Lusa agency.

According to the same source, the meeting is scheduled for 15:00 pm, with the participation of the political party by the head of State Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of the Assembly of the Republic Ferro Rodrigues and members of parties with parliamentary representation.

The last meeting at Infarmed, in Lisbon, took place on the 16th of September, at a time in which Portugal recorded significant progress in the evolution of the vaccination rate, a reduction in the incidence and transmission rate (Rt) of covid-19 .

This Friday's meeting takes place at a time when the process of vaccinating people over 65 and health professionals with a third dose of the vaccine against covid-19 is underway.

Contrary to the September trend, this meeting will take place at a time when Portugal registers an increase in both the incidence of the disease and the transmission indicator.

On Sunday, according to official data, there were 1.483 new confirmed cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, 15 deaths associated with covid-19 and an increase in inpatients.

In several European countries, especially in those with low vaccination rates, there is a worrying increase in terms of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths associated with covid-19.

Regarding the situation in Portugal, Baltazar Nunes, an expert from the Ricardo Jorge Institute, warned that the "loss of effectiveness of vaccines" may coincide with the "moment of greater transmissibility associated with the Christmas and New Year festivities".

In Penafiel, last Friday, the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, called for the third dose of the vaccine for people over 65 years old and admitted that "all scenarios" are open in the face of a possible fifth wave of the pandemic .
