CEBAL shares knowledge about the vegetative propagation of thistle in Évora

Session will have theoretical and practical component

The Alentejo Agricultural and Agro-Food Biotechnology Center (CEBAL) will promote, this Monday, 29 November, at 14:30 pm, the workshop “Vegetative propagation of Cynara cardunculus”, in face-to-face format, at the Mitra Pole at the University of Évora.

This is a session dedicated to the valorization of thistle, «an endogenous resource well adapted to the territory and a culture with a profitable and sustainable future», which will address «the different techniques and materials for propagating this species' plants».

The action will consist of a theoretical component followed by a practical component in the field, «in order to provide knowledge of the productive reality of this resource», explains CEBAL.

The thistle «is an endogenous resource whose flower is used in the production of cheeses, but current knowledge highlights the multifunctionality of this plant, not only in the manufacture of cheese, but also as a source of bio-ingredients of interest to the food and pharmaceutical industries, as well. as a source of biomass for different industrial applications”.

Therefore, according to the centre, «the propagation of plants of interest is extremely relevant for the economic valorization of thistle, guaranteeing differentiation and productive stability».

The workshop will have a theoretical session and a practical session in the field. The theoretical session will be the responsibility of researcher Liliana Marum from CEBAL, who will talk about different techniques and materials for vegetative propagation, with a detailed analysis of thistle.

The practical field session will be conducted by the CynaraTeC project team, allowing all participants to directly manipulate the plant material, with the possibility of obtaining and planting thistle seedlings.

The session aims to reach agricultural producers, as well as all economic agents interested in valuing this endogenous resource.

The initiative is part of the technology transfer project – CynaraTeC, financed by the Alentejo Regional Operational Program – Alentejo 2020, a knowledge and technology transfer project that aims to unite scientific research with different sectors
industries in supporting the valorization of Cardo.
