The “Algarvian” João Rodrigues won the “Highly Commended” award in the Aquatic World category of the “GTD – European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021”, announced the underwater photographer this Wednesday, November 10, on his social networks.
«This time, the good news is for me and for conservation photography in Portugal», begins by saying João Rodrigues, on his personal Facebook page.
Captured at the service of National Geographic Portugal magazine, for the article “The incredible cycle of Portuguese sardines”, the award-winning photograph portrays “one of the most special moments I've lived under water during the last year”.
In the photograph, a juvenile horse mackerel (of the species Trachurus Trachurus) swimming synchronized with a jellyfish, taking refuge in its interior during the approach of João Rodrigues.
For the underwater photographer, this was «an unforgettable adventure off the coast of Olhão, in the Algarve, with the support of the brave sea of Ocean Vibes».
João Rodrigues also took the opportunity to offer «my congratulations to all the photographers», especially to Angel Fitor, «an inspiring photographer that I very much admire».
In October, João Rodrigues had won in the category “Behaviour: amphibians and reptiles” (Behavior: amphibians and reptiles) of the contest “Wildlife Photographer of the Year”.
