The Chamber of Faro over the next decade, it will allocate 10% of its annual budget to the cultural and creative sector. The "historic" decision was taken unanimously at a meeting this Tuesday, 2 November.

By assuming this political commitment, the municipal executive assumes «the importance of Culture as a central factor in the development of the city and the municipality», begins by saying the Chamber of Faro.

Another of the decisions taken was related to “the process that will be launched in order to reformulate the support formats for the cultural and associative sector”.

The local authority will now begin to review the support formats for associations and, among other innovations, will include the possibility of attributing financial support every two years or even three years.

With these decisions, the Chamber of Faro it seeks to “increase the stability levels of cultural entities linked to artistic creation, also enhancing their independence”, explains the municipality.

This decision is of particular importance “because it is unusual, or possibly unheard of, in the national panorama”, since, as a rule, this type of support is based on an annual basis.

At the Chamber meeting, already with the new municipal executive, the intention to present the candidacy of Faro the European Capital of Culture, which motivates the decision to “allocate a set of funds to support operational and capital costs within the scope of the project”, stresses the municipality.

To the president of the Chamber of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, the decisions now taken “accomplish a set of aspirations that have been promoted throughout the entire candidacy process”.

«We have always said, from the beginning, that more important than the result is the process and the imprint it leaves, and with this decision, we are showing that there is a path of no return», says the mayor, adding that «Culture and Creativity are one of the areas in greatest expansion in Europe, being a sector that represents almost 4% of the European GDP and that employs almost nine million people».

«We want that Faro look to your future, seeking to develop around respect for nature and the landscape, leveraging the knowledge generated by the university and combining new technological dynamics. In this perspective, Culture must assume itself as an aggregator. we want that Faro increasingly be a good place to live, study, work and invest», concludes the mayor of Faro.
