Ofir Renato Chagas: Posto Agrário de Tavira “it was a garden and people came for a walk”

Citizens' Movement by CEAT and Urban Gardens seeks to «call for a broad reflection on the revitalization of this space»

"This was a pleasure tour and people came to visit." The very close relationship between Tavira and their Posto Agrário, particularly during the almond blossom season, is recalled by Ofir Renato Chagas, former administrative employee of the Estação Agrária de Tavira, in the 2nd video of the project «Histórias do Posto Agrário» , by the Citizens' Movement by the CEAT (Tavira Agricultural Experimentation Center) and Urban Gardens of Tavira.

Between 1953 and 1973, Ofir Renato Chagas experienced, in the first person, the heyday of the Estação Agrária de Tavira, his influence in the “province”, as well as his direct work with agricultural producers. It also highlights the technical experiences on products, professional training or the camaraderie among the numerous team of people who worked there.

With the release of this video, the Citizens' Movement for CEAT and Urban Gardens continues the work of collecting and disseminating live testimonies that seek to make known the grandeur of the Posto Agrário and its importance in the local community.

A part of the human history of the Tavira Agricultural Experimentation Center (CEAT) will be revealed “through some testimonies of those who worked there and knew it at the height of their activity”. The compilation of seven stories/testimonies is being made by the Citizens movement by CEAT and Urban Gardens and will be made known through videos broadcast on various social networks.

This first edition will feature the testimonies of professor Ana Vera Cardoso, former trainer of the Employment and Professional Training Institute (IEFP) at CEAT, and historian and writer Ofir Renato Chagas, former administrative employee of the Estação Agrária de Tavira.

The “Citizens' Movement for CEAT and Urban Gardens” seeks to “appeal for a broad reflection on the revitalization of this space, continuing the work that has been carried out over the course of months”, explains in a press release.

In June 2020, the movement introduced a proposal to make the “Posto Agrário” an active zone in Tavira and for the people of Tavira, and the implementation of 50 plots of urban gardens for beneficiaries of five social neighborhoods in the city is currently underway.

The citizens of this Movement “would also like to be part of one of the working groups foreseen in the regulation of the Competence Center for the Mediterranean Diet, dealing with the theme “Mediterranean Diet” and the revitalization of the CEAT”.
