Festival kicks off with exhibition Faro West, by Pauliana Valente Pimentel

Street Art Gallery

The 10th edition of Verão Azul – Transdisciplinary Festival of Contemporary Arts will take, from 4 to 20 November, an «extensive and challenging program» of theater, dance, music, performance, visual arts and cinema to Lagos, Loulé and Faro.

In 2021, the festival reaches «a round number that marks an entire decade dedicated to the promotion of contemporary art, in all its disciplines (and indisciplines), in the Algarve region», praises casaBranca, which promotes the event.

«If the tick-tack tick-tack was already a more or less unnoticed presence, in the last year and a half it has become evident: we inhabit a veritable time bomb. Faced with such a shock, how to continue making art? Why continue to make art? What impacts can we already recognize on individuals and the collective? There are countless possibilities to decipher these concerns. We dare not give any but challenge the answer. Therefore, this Blue Summer, we have 29 proposals from local, national and international artists, who provoke us to think, create and talk about the environment, human rights, democracy and uncertainties», highlights the association.

Pauliana Valente Pimentel

On November 4th, the festival opens, the exposure Faro West of Pauliana Valente Pimentel «takes an affectionate and intimate look at the different and still possible ways of life of the gypsy communities of Loulé and Faro».

Also betting on intimate encounters, Alex Cassal presents, on the 12th and 13th of November, in Loulé, at the Municipal Library, “The End of the World Library“, a spectacle that «resignifies and retells the imminent experience of the apocalypse, through the many stories that a library houses and can shelter».

Thinking about the body, from its social and economic roles to its potential and sensitive urgencies, the festival also features the Catalan group ZA! and Michael Bonneville, «artists with whom we have already collaborated and with whom we do not fail to do so», highlights casaBranca.

João Caiano and Martim Santos

This 10th Blue Summer, highlights the association, «is also immersed in a self-reflection on the responsibility and vocation of art in the face of environmental problems, with the film, followed by a debate, by Luciana Fina and with the old Mercedes-Benz from the Street Art Gallery, to denounce the precariousness and the feeling of impotence of cultural agents and professionals. For this reason, we cannot fail to highlight local artists: Carolina Cantinho & António Guerreiro, João Caiano & Martim Santos e José Jesus & Flávio Martins, thinking about loves, endings, choices and so many other things.

This year, the focus on education also continues, with 11 practical activities for children and teenagers, including workshops, masterclasses, sessions for schools and creative workshops.

Artists like Antonio Jorge Gonçalves, LBC Soldjah, Sergio Pelagio e Isabel Gaivao «they are in charge of taking all these important issues and questions to the kids and girls».

The association casaBraca emphasizes that it hopes "that this time bomb", "about to explode", "may represent, in addition to a planet on the brink of collapse, also the power to awaken everyone to a radical and necessary transformation" .
