Covid-19: "We cannot have relapses, they would be fatal", defends the President of the Republic

During the Euro-Africa Forum

The President of the Republic highlighted today that «a good part of the world is in a pandemic», which delays economic recovery, and defended that Portugal must «overcome well» this crisis, without «relapses», which «would be fatal».

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa left this alert in a conversation with his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, via videoconference, broadcast today in the fourth edition of the Euro-Africa Forum.

“If all goes well, in a year or less than a year we will be discussing the post-pandemic more and more. And that is the great challenge of those who are participating in this forum today: do not forget that the pandemic must be overcome well, we cannot have relapses», he said.

"We cannot have relapses, they would be fatal," he reinforced.

The head of state considered that "time cannot be wasted" on economic and social recovery and that this "is one of the lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic".

«To recover and take a qualitative leap, in the energy transition, in the digital transition, in the forms of financing the economic future in the short term, in new statutes and new forms of investment – and there the imagination of entrepreneurs, civil society is crucial – no time can be wasted,” he said.

At the beginning of this conversation with the President of Angola, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa noted that "much of the world is still in a pandemic", which he pointed out as "a fundamental prior issue when talking about economic development, social development", that "many sometimes you don't understand, especially in Europe».

“In many European countries, namely in Eastern Europe, in many African, Asian, American countries, in particular in Latin America, the pandemic exists. There is and conditions the economic start, the social start”, he said, adding further on: “Today we are still discussing this reality, because it is there”.

Addressing the "entrepreneurs, people from the world of work, public officials" participating in this forum, the President of the Republic drew attention to "the delay in the recovery of large economies", such as the People's Republic of China, "which is producing for the domestic market, but it is not yet exporting what it exported”, the United States of America and “several important countries and economies in Europe”.

According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, "what is happening, and is happening all over the world, has to do with making things easier, considering that the problem of the pandemic is over."

On the other hand, in terms of public health, in his opinion, “the testing cannot be facilitated”.

«For the functioning of schools, for the functioning of economic activity, for certain broader meetings, sometimes family meetings or others of a socio-professional or social nature, the practice of testing – naturally not in the intensive way that happened in previous phases – is very important , so we can monitor the evolution of the situation», he defended.
