The Bemposta Schools Group, in Portimão, will take 190 students and teachers to remove the weeping creek from the Alvor dunes, between October 12th and 15th, as part of the SEIVA – Education and Volunteer Initiatives Week Environmental.

This action, promoted by the municipality of Portimão, will take place during the morning and is aimed at nine 8th grade classes of that group, which includes schools EB 2,3 D. João II, from Alvor, EB José Sobral, from Mexilhoeira Grande, and EB da Bemposta, as part of the SEIVA initiatives coordinated by the Portuguese Environment Agency.

«Since 2017, the Bemposta Grouping of Schools and the Portimão municipality have developed, in the Alvor ecosystem, several actions to remove the chorão-das-praias (carpobrotus edulis), an exotic plant originally from South Africa, whose impressive propagation capacity and vigorous growth prevent the development and survival of native vegetation», explains the municipality of Portimão.

This plant, introduced in Portugal for ornamental purposes, and later cultivated to fix slopes and dunes, occupies vast areas, forming, in some places, continuous mats.

The beach whiner is considered an invasive species, with the ability to occupy the territory excessively, in terms of area or number of individuals, which causes a significant change in ecosystems.
