Days of rain and thunder are coming in the Algarve and Alentejo

All districts in mainland Portugal are under notice

The rain should be back in the Algarve and Alentejo this Monday, September 13th. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the districts of Faro and Beja under yellow warning due to precipitation and thunderstorm.

According to the IPMA, "showers, sometimes heavy, of hail and accompanied by gusts of strong wind" are foreseen.

Added to this is the forecast of thunderstorm which must be “frequent and dispersed”.

Both notices begin at 6:00 am this Monday, the 13th, and last until Wednesday, the 15th, at 12:00 pm.

This phenomenon, to which a drop in temperature will be associated, is due to the «approach of a depression to mainland Portugal with an expression in altitude», with «tropical air masses, unstable and with high water vapor content».

In this situation “of instability, there is uncertainty in the spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall”, but the IPMA placed 15 districts under yellow warning and three under orange warning (Leiria, Lisbon and Setúbal).

This is because, according to this institute, «strong rainfall is expected, with significant impacts, particularly in urban areas, where there is a risk of rapid floods, and in road traffic».

Meteo Trás-os-Montes says that precipitation is expected «in regions that are in great need of water, such as the Algarve, Alentejo or Beira Baixa».
