Navy sailboats leave Ayamonte and head for Portimão

They were in Spain to participate in the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation trip

NRP Polar, of the Portuguese Navy

The sailboats of the Portuguese Navy «Polar NRP" is "NRP Zarco» started off from Ayamonte, in Spain, and are now heading to Portimão.

These two training ships were, since the 19th of July, participating in the commemorations of the 500th anniversary of the first sailing round the world, which took place from 1519 to 1522, initiated by the Portuguese navigator Fernão de Magalhães, at the service of the Crown of Castile , and completed by the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano.

​This commemoration is organized by the National Cruise Association of Portugal and the 500 Years of Spain Association, with the participation of approximately 25 sailboats.

In this mission, stopovers were made in several national and foreign ports, namely Sines, Portimão, Huelva, Rota, Seville, Cádiz, Barbate, Ceuta and Ayamonte.

In addition to their participation in these commemorations, the two ships have a very important mission: «that of marine instruction for cadets of the Escola Naval, future officers of the Portuguese Navy».

Altogether, this mission has already embarked about 25 cadets, in different periods.

The mission ends next Sunday, August 15th, with the arrival at the Lisbon Naval Base.​
