RIAS recovers stork that reached the center with a plug in the esophagus

Animal had difficulties in feeding

A juvenile stork that had a plug in its esophagus and was therefore unable to feed itself, is recovering its physical condition at the RIAS – Wildlife Research and Recovery Center, where it arrived last week.

Second the RIAS the animal seemed to be weak, so “we decided to capture the bird and examine it. During the physical examination, his weakness was confirmed. However, when the veterinarian examined the inside of the mouth, the reason for the weakness was obvious – a rope was visible at the base of the tongue, still connected to something in the esophagus».

“When the veterinarian finished removing the rope, you could see what was at the other end: a tampon,” reveals the center on her blog.

The RIAS recalls that “disposable material used during menstruation (spigots and/or sanitary towels) is often found in rubbish bins or in open landfills, where these birds are constantly looking for food”.

Therefore, the center calls for the use of alternatives. “There are reusable pads and the menstrual cup. These are less harmful options for the human body, more environmentally friendly and in the medium/long term they are also a more economical choice for your wallet», he recalls.

The stork is now in an outdoor facility where it will recover its physical condition, to later be returned to nature.
