The 3rd course on “Transmission of Master-Apprentice Knowledge”, dedicated to entwined in esparto, will take place from September 28th to October 29th, in the parish of Alte (Loulé).

This art was once quite popular in the Algarve, especially in the Alte area, but is now on the verge of disappearing in the region.

«However, there is an emerging potential» around this craft that the QRER cooperative wants to develop, contributing to the emergence of new economic activities in the interior of the Algarve, promoting the settlement of people and thus ensuring the continuity of this art.

«Thus, as in previous training courses dedicated to sugarcane and its applicability in sustainable architecture, held in Alcoutim, this course is intended to transmit practical knowledge about manual work with esparto, from its collection, treatment and use in the creation of objects , in order to train new artisans to use this natural raw material, as a core resource of their activity», explains the QRER.

This will be an intensive course that integrates in its programming the main techniques to develop skills in the area of woven in esparto, namely basketwork and other utilitarian and decorative pieces, combining knowledge and experiences in product design to introduce innovation and encourage the creation of pieces of contemporary character.

The training also includes the participation of the few masters of the region's Spartans and a Spanish master of swordsman, coming from a family with a long tradition in this profession, who will be able to teach some different technical solutions and share other knowledge around the work in esparto .

This action is aimed at a group of eight entrepreneurs who are looking to learn different techniques to apply in their future projects, some of which can be inserted in the QRIAR Incubator.

The course sessions will take place mainly from Tuesday to Friday, lasting 7 hours a day, between 9:30 am and 17:30 pm.
