In a fire that devastated much wherever it went, there is at least one good news: the 14 fallow deer in the Conceição de Tavira Leisure Park survived the flames that hit the National Forest. The space, destroyed by fire, will be recovered by the Tavirense municipality in order to receive visitors "soon".

When he arrived at the Leisure Park, at 5:00 am this Tuesday, August 17, José Manuel Guerreiro, vice-president of the Tavira City Council, could not contain his happiness in seeing that the deer managed to save themselves. tell the Sul Informação.

The mayor hastened to "take pictures" of the animals and send them "to some friends and to the municipal veterinarian of Tavira", in order to give the good news: "we managed to save the deer from the fire".

These deer, a species of wild deer, from their scientific name lady lady, are «one of the ex-libris» of the Leisure Park, taking many children and young people to visit it, as «these animals come to eat from the hand of the visitors». Only now they are "very scared because of the fire".

The municipality also considered releasing these animals, as "there was a chance of cutting the net so that they could get out", but, as the space was surrounded by flames, "we decided to leave them inside".

«We thought that the instinct would work and it worked», explains the Tavirense mayor.

The habits that the deer have when faced with the heat, and the dam with some dimensions that the Leisure Park has, were fundamental for their survival, as the animals "went into the water to cool off against the flames".

The proof is "in the footprints we discovered this morning [the 17th] by the dam" after workers from the municipality of Tavira carried out an investigation, to see what condition the Leisure Park was in.

The fire quickly "devastated about 80% of the territory" of the National Forest of Conceição de Tavira, "approximately 470 hectares", of which 24 correspond to the area of the Leisure Park.

Little withstood the fire, a kiosk, wooden tables for picnics, as well as many of the pine trees and other species of trees that made up the flora of the space were devastated by the fire.

On the morning of Wednesday, August 18, the workers of the municipality of Tavira moved forward with the replacement of the fence at the Mata da Conceição Leisure Park, in the areas where it was damaged, in order to protect the animals and prevent the entry of predators .

«We are recovering about 2600 meters of the network that delimit the area of the Park, as the posts that support it are destroyed».

As for the burned trees, the mayor states that "there are many that are no longer recoverable", but, in relation to many others, "nature itself will recover everything that existed here".

Now, after the fire broke out, José Manuel Guerreiro said that «we are not going to “cry over spilled milk”», and the recovery of the Leisure Park is already being considered.

«Let's get down to work and work so that, in some time, this Park can be visited and that it becomes a fresh, green area. We believe that this will happen», concluded the mayor.
