Loulé Schools Win Prizes in Water Efficiency Competition

Loulé Secondary School, EB 2,3 Padre João Coelho Cabanita and Cândido Guerreiro Professional School (Alte) were awarded in the 1st edition of the “Hydric Efficiency” competition, promoted by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), after applications made in together with the Loulé autarchy. The awards ceremony took place through a webinar which took place on the 19th of July.

This competition, launched in March, had as its main objective «to raise awareness and mobilize school communities in the Algarve, in partnership with their municipalities, for the need to monitor water consumption, while promoting projects to implement best practices for its use. efficient”, says the municipality of Loulé in a note sent to the newsrooms.

The applications presented by Loulé were drawn up by a multidisciplinary team made up of technicians from the municipality, in conjunction with teachers from the three educational establishments.

In a total of 33 applications made by different schools across the Algarve, Loulé submitted, on the 5th of June, World Environment Day, three applications for two of the three possible categories (Action, Performance and Monitoring).

Thus, in the Monitoring category, the application of the Padre João Coelho Cabanita School Grouping (Loulé) was distinguished with 2nd place, winning a prize of 10 thousand euros. The application presented by Escola Profissional Cândido Guerreiro (Alte) won 3rd place and a prize of 5 thousand euros.

In the Performance category, the Loulé Secondary School application won 1st prize and a prize of 15 thousand euros.

This educational establishment was also recognized with the ECO.AP 2.0 Barometer Award – ADENE Award, which consists of the integration of the awarded School and the respective municipality/managing entity in the “ECO.AP 2.0 Barometer”.

The awards ceremony took place on the 19th of July, during a webinar where the results of this 1st edition were announced.

«The municipality of Loulé congratulates all the schools involved, whether in the Algarve region or in our municipality, for their commitment, and all the technicians and teachers who work daily on this very important front that will certainly result in concerted work that will contribute to raise awareness of the youngest, determinants for a better present and future», stresses the mayor of Loulé, Vítor Aleixo.

Soon, the municipality and schools will start the proposed work, considering, among the actions to be developed, «the improvement of equipment/systems for monitoring consumption, the definition of monitoring and alert teams, the development of awareness-raising actions, the investment in rainwater management systems for the collection and use of rainwater, the optimization of the irrigation of green spaces, as well as the definition of other criteria to control real losses and improve current practices for the use of this very important resource and scarce as is water».

The “Hydric Efficiency” competition, part of the Algarve's Regional Water Efficiency Plan, was born from a partnership between APA and the Algarve Intermunicipal Community (AMAL) and the company Águas do Algarve.

It also has the technical-scientific support of the University of Algarve (UAlg) and ADENE – Agency for Energy and institutional support from the General Directorate of School Establishments – Algarve Region Services Directorate (DGESTE – DSR Algarve).
