This Friday, 23 July, the Marina de Portimão will be one of the stopping points for the 25 sailboats that sailed today, from the Alcântara dock, to participate in the 4th Lisbon-Andalusia-Ceuta-Alcoutim crossing, which will run until the 11th of August.

After the Port of Sines, this will be the second stop for the boats, whose crews will have the opportunity to visit the Museum of Portimão, where each representative of sailing ships in transit will be given a selection of local products, which should only be tasted in the vessels.

This initiative is organized by the ANC – Associação Nacional de Cruzeiros, in collaboration with the Spanish association 500 Years Circumnavegación a Vela.

It takes place as part of the commemorations of the fifth centenary of the first circumnavigation voyage that, commanded by the Portuguese navigator Fernão Magalhães and completed by the Spaniard Juan Sebastián Elcano, made the first trip around the world between 1519 and 1522.

With a cultural, historical and sporting character, the sailing fleet will pass through various ports and marinas in Portugal and Spain, from Lisbon to Ceuta, with the ascent of the rivers Guadalquivir to Seville and Guadiana to Alcoutim/Sanlucar, where the cruise will end on the August 11th.

Also at the Museu de Portimão, Isilda Gomes, president of the municipality, will offer a trophy in the shape of a sardine, a symbol of the city, to Pedro Xavier, president of the ANC, and Alberto Mendel, president of the association 500 Years Circumnavegación a Vela, in a ceremony scheduled for 20:00.

The initiative will thus celebrate this maritime expedition of great historical relevance, "which can be considered as the first act of globalization on the planet, opening up previously unknown connections and shaping the world we know today", says the municipality of Portimão.
