The Museum of Portimão will open the exhibitions “Ouvir o Oceano” and “Design with a can”, on July 10, at 17 pm, both with the sea as the central theme.

“Ouvir o Oceano”, by artist BJ Boulter (Bárbara Jane Boulter), will be on display until November 14 in the Temporary Exhibitions Room. The exhibition is part of the “MAR” project of the Algarve Museum Network (RMA).

The exhibition aims to "draw attention and send a strong message to the need to protect the beauty and purity of the oceans, preventing their degradation, in particular through the discharge of polluting waste and plastic packaging, as well as through poaching" , says the Chamber of Portimão.

In a region strongly linked to maritime culture, such as Portimão and the Algarve, BJ Boulter, through various materials, «alerts the threat to the extinction of many species of fish, crustaceans, mammals, turtles and reefs, due to pollution that provoke'.

Through his paintings and sculptures, BJ Boulter recalls “the need, not only to think, but also to act every day to save the ocean, preventing its contamination”, stresses the artist.

Bárbara Jane Boulter's project arose from the sculpture “The Waste of a Dolphin”, presented in 2019 in the riverside area, next to the Portimão Museum.

“When I see how carelessly we humans are treating our land and its inhabitants, I get very worried. I want to tell you to stop and listen to the cry of the birds, the anguish of the animals and the silent call of those who dwell in the depths of the sea, contaminated by our careless habits. Listening to the ocean is urgent!” stresses BJ Boulter.

As for the exhibition “Design with a can”, it will be on display at the entrance of the Museum until the 29th of August and is the result of a competition promoted by ANICP – Association of Canned Fish Industry and by the Mission Structure for the Celebrations of the V Centenary of the First Circum-Navigation.

The exhibition aims to identify and select proposals with a strong component of innovation and creativity, for the design of a can of fish preserves.

The competition, under the theme “Discovering the Ocean Planet”, had the participation of 60 design students. In addition to the three awarded works, the traveling exhibition brought together 50 pieces, selected from among the best proposals.

According to the jury of the event, the cans in the competition are "creative, bold and innovative, with surprising approaches and breathtaking themes", making this exhibition "a way to praise the past of the canning industry, so important for the local economy, at the same time that visitors will be able to discover the emblematic spaces of the Portimão Museum directly related to the history of the building, an old canning factory», stresses the space.
