Mass vaccination, fewer restrictions for those with a valid vaccination certificate or test, and extraordinary support for companies. These were some of the themes that Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão, took to a meeting, via videoconference, this Friday, July 2, with the Secretary of State for Tourism.
The mayor expressed to Rita Marques "her apprehension for the near future, especially with regard to the tourism sector, asking for urgent measures to be taken."
Isilda Gomes had the opportunity to mention "not understanding why there was no timely reinforcement of vaccination in the Algarve, since, being a tourist region par excellence, it would be essential that the Algarve companies were operating as normally as possible at this time of year".
In addition, the mayor of Portimão fears that the situation in the region "is also driving away domestic tourism, with very negative impacts on our economic fabric."
"With the scenario ahead of us, of a very bad summer and consequent economic disaster for our companies from October," the president proposed to the government official "letting go of restrictions on the economy for people with a vaccination certificate or test with 24 hours, in order to encourage mass vaccination and, at the same time, protect our economic fabric, allowing companies to work».
Isilda Gomes went further and defended "the immediate reinforcement of vaccination, open to all citizens who want to be vaccinated, regardless of age group, allowing for the acceleration of the process."
The mayor also requested "extraordinary government support for companies in the Algarve, to mitigate the effects of a summer without tourism."
As the key idea of this virtual meeting, Isilda Gomes asked Rita Marques to take urgent measures, «requesting that people get vaccinated as soon as possible, and en masse, to achieve group immunity, allowing our companies to work quickly , because only then will it be possible to win this».
