Algarvio Diogo Marreiros is European champion in speed skating

This is the first time in the history of Speed ​​Skating that Portugal has won gold in the senior class.

This Monday, 19 July, the Algarve's Diogo Marreiros was crowned European champion in the 10 thousand meters race, in speed skating, played at the Patinódromo Armando da Silva Rodrigues, in Canelas (Vila Nova de Gaia).

This is the first time, in the history of Speed ​​Skating, that Portugal wins the gold, in the senior class.

For Diogo Marreiros, Roller Lagos athlete, this is «a dream come true».

“I feel so happy. We worked a lot in Lagos, me and my coach – professor Paulo Baptista -, Martyn Dias, Miguel Bravo and Manuel Martins. We did an incredible job and, to be able to bring this result to us, for all that work we did this year, it's incredible and it's a dream come true», said the athlete, in statements reproduced by the Portuguese Skating Federation.

In the 5000 meter point race, there was another Roller Lagos athlete who won a medal: Miguel Monteiro won silver in the youth division.

According to the athlete, «the goal was the top five".

“I got second place, thanks to my team, this medal is mine and theirs and all my colleagues. I was immediately moved, I didn't even know the result, but I knew that it was good, so tears came to my eyes at once», he concluded.
