«If it hasn't started yet, it's about to start» the study of the train connection to the Airport of Faro, guaranteed, this Tuesday, June 15, the minister of Infrastructure and Housing.

Pedro Nuno Santos was present at the inauguration of the new Easyjet base at the airport of Faro, where was questioned by Sul Informação on the rail connection to the airport infrastructure.

This is a project that has long been claimed in the region, but it has never had a green light to go forward.

For Pedro Nuno Santos, this is due “not only to environmental studies”, but also “to the feasibility of the connection itself”.

“We are reversing a cycle of abandonment of the railway. We have started to do this work, but there is much more to be done. It is necessary to study the train connection, both at the Airport of Faro, as in Francisco Sá Carneiro, in Porto. This work, if it has not started yet, will begin to be done», guaranteed the governor.

The railway connection to the airport is, moreover, one of the works that is part of the National Investment Plan (PNI) 2030. According to this document, the project should advance in the period between 2021 and 2026.

Even before the release of this document, in 2019, Carlos Fernandes, vice president of Infraestruturas de Portugal, he had said that this connection was going to be studied, being an “essentially environmental” problem.

Returning to his visit this Tuesday, June 15, Minister Pedro Nuno Santos was also asked about the role of TAP at the Airport of Faro – and whether the Portuguese company would start making direct flights from the Algarve to destinations other than Lisbon.

The minister replied that TAP, "as the flagship company that it is, is specializing in the long and medium haul."
