ABC President says closing schools is justified by the "number of active cases"

Nuno Marques, president of the Algarve Biomedical Center (ABC), considered this Monday, June 28, that the decision, which entered into force this Monday, June 28, suspending classroom classes in five Algarve municipalities is justified by the «significant number of active cases». 

The ABC, moreover, welcomes this measure that affects the classroom classes of the 1st and 2nd cycles of the municipalities of Albufeira, Faro, Loulé, Olhão and São Brás de Alportel.

In a note sent to the press, Nuno Marques, president of the ABC, explains that "only in this way is it possible to stop the transmission chains".

This responsible also alerts to the need to maintain the protection measures.

«The use of a mask, physical distance and frequent hand hygiene are habits that are here to stay. It is essential that people realize that it is possible to have a social life without neglecting the necessary care to keep the pandemic under control, regardless of whether we are vaccinated. There is no reason not to enjoy the Algarve in safety», he defends.

The decision to suspend classroom classes for the 1st and 2nd cycles in these five Algarve municipalities was made known at the end of this Sunday and took into account the epidemiological situation.

Speaking to journalists today, the regional delegate for Health in the Algarve said that the state of the pandemic made it necessary to "do something".

According to the Regional Health Administration (ARS), there are currently «816 active confirmed cases of Covid-19», in these municipalities, with an incidence rate at 14 days (cases per 100.000 inhabitants) of 583 for Albufeira, 329 for Faro, 448 for Loulé, 403 for Olhão and 326 for São Brás de Alportel».

Even so, the measure has already been criticized by parents' associations., namely because it was communicated on a Sunday.
