O documentary “War Horses”, by João Rodrigues, will be exhibited this Tuesday, June 8, World Ocean Day, at the José Mariano Gago Auditorium, in the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (Lisbon).

How can science help protect what is left of the Ria Formosa seahorse population? Is extinction inevitable? What is the role of local communities in protecting and conserving the ocean?

«On World Ocean Day, we alert to the importance of knowing to preserve, revealing the history of one of the most emblematic groups of animals in the Ria Formosa, based on the documentary “War Horses: between extinction and conservation”, by João Rodrigues , distinguished at environmental film festivals in the United States, Argentina, Mexico and England», says the Pavilion of Knowledge.

Once considered the largest seahorse community in the world, the group that now inhabits the sea grasslands in the Algarve is at risk of disappearing. Illegal capture destined for the Asian market is one of its main threats, responsible for having already decimated a large part of the population.

This is a face-to-face session, followed by a meeting with João Rodrigues and Miguel Correia, researcher at the Center for Marine Sciences of the University of Algarve.
