Parents do not understand the difference in treatment between Algarve and Lisbon when schools close

FRAPAL considers that this decision, known yesterday, the 27th, "was taken without prior hearing of the main stakeholders: the families"

The Algarve Regional Federation of Parent Associations (FRAPAL) said this Monday, June 28, day on which the suspension of on-site education began in five municipalities, not understanding "the disparity of treatment" between the Algarve and Lisbon and Tagus Valley.

In a note sent to the press, FRAPAL considers that this decision, known yesterday, the 27th, "was taken without prior hearing from the main stakeholders: the families, not forgetting that the suspension of classroom classes for students of the 1st and 2nd cycles of Education Basic in five municipalities in the Algarve has an impact on almost 50% of the student population of this age group».

«Apparently, the process of controlling class by class is no longer sufficient to prevent an escalation of infections» in Albufeira, Faro, Loulé, Olhão and São Brás de Alportel «dramatically affects many families, with very little time in advance to plan their lives for the next two weeks».

In this note, FRAPAL also asks what «will be done to kindergarten students» or to students «with special needs», if «they will go through the same problem already felt before, during distance learning».

The Federation of Parent Associations also raises concerns about the end of the school year.

“Should these two weeks at a distance be considered for evaluation purposes? Not all families still have the necessary resources or the same domestic conditions», he considers.

And “does state support remain for parents and guardians? When will it be made available?”, he asks.

Finally, FRAPAL also shows its concern with the in-person support that would take place in the classroom in secondary schools, “aimed at students who will take national exams”.

The decision to suspend classroom classes for the 1st and 2nd cycles in these five Algarve municipalities was made known at the end of this Sunday and took into account the epidemiological situation.

Speaking to journalists today, the regional delegate for Health in the Algarve said that the state of the pandemic made it necessary to "do something".

According to the Regional Health Administration (ARS), there are currently «816 active confirmed cases of Covid-19», in these municipalities, with an incidence rate at 14 days (cases per 100.000 inhabitants) of 583 for Albufeira, 329 for Faro, 448 for Loulé, 403 for Olhão and 326 for São Brás de Alportel».
