Work of the Palácio Gama Lobo de Loulé candidate for the National Award for Urban Rehabilitation

Award aims to "distinguish the most valuable urban interventions for society in their multiple aspects"

The intervention carried out by the Câmara de Loulé at Palácio Gama Lobo, in Loulé, is part of the list of candidates for the National Award for Urban Rehabilitation, in the category of “Social Impact”.

This award is an initiative of Vida Imobiliária and Promevi, which aims to "distinguish the most valuable urban interventions for society in their multiple aspects", according to the City Council of Loulé.

The contribution to the qualification of cities and their impact on the community, success measured by market acceptance, impact and social value and the ability to induce change in the urban fabric are some of the aspects evaluated.
The rehabilitation work of Palácio Gama Lobo, inaugurated in 2019, resulted from a project by the architect Luis Guerreiro and was carried out by the construction company Costa&Carreira.

The intervention “constitutes a remarkable work from the architectural point of view, especially for the balance reached between respect for pre-existing conditions and the incorporation of new materials and new elements”.

«The rehabilitation process of Palácio Gama Lobo followed paths of interpretation, preservation and restoration, not giving rise to radicalism. The intention was for the intervention to be smooth, eliminating excesses and carefully adding some architectural and artistic contemporaneities that marked our time with respect», described the Loulé local authority.

In this way, the constructive solutions «were little intrusive, dated, contemporary and reversible whenever possible, resorting to the use of sustainable and ecological techniques and materials».

Palácio Gama Lobo is an ancient emblazoned building, «a noble house that constitutes a landmark of the civil architecture of Loulé and an important element in its expansion and urban development in the second half of the XNUMXth century».

The rehabilitation works, which motivated an investment of 1,3 million euros, with the support of community funds, allowed to install the headquarters of the Loulé Criativo project there, «a space for Creative Tourism projects», but also the ECOA – Espaço of Creativity, Crafts and Arts with the valences of residences and workshops and the Loulé Design Lab.

«Zones of coworking for designers e makers, workshops and training workshops, library space, space for lectures and meetings, a visitable gallery space and a shop are the areas that stand out in this building», said the municipality.

There is still no date for the awards ceremony.
