Ambiolhão wants to show that “Ria Limpa” is “Ria Linda”

«Knowing the problem and the initiatives defined to face it is very important to create a critical mass and knowledge about the need for a clean and even more beautiful estuary than it already is»

The municipal company Ambiolhão launched the “Ria Limpa, Ria Linda” program on World Environment Day, June 5th.

This initiative "consists of bringing together any and all company initiatives to eliminate irregular discharges of wastewater in the Ria Formosa", says Ambiolhão.

"Most of these irregular discharges are the result of the fact that, in the past, domestic sewage and rainwater connections were designed to be discharged into the same pipelines that then discharged all this water into the Ria Formosa", he adds.

“From the 80s onwards, with the awareness of ecological issues and the need to treat this waste, it was necessary to build sewage treatment plants. However, the old connections were many and the work to separate the rainwater from the domestic sewage was complex and expensive, aggravated by the lack of registration of the buried networks», he explains.

«The inauguration of the new WWTP Faro/Olhão, the expansion and improvement of the municipality's sanitation networks and the municipality's great willingness to definitively resolve the problem contributed to the municipal company starting an incessant work of identifying and eliminating these irregular connections», according to Ambiolhão.

Thus, this municipal company decided to unify under the brand “Ria Limpa, Ria Linda” the actions aimed at solving the issue.

"In addition to the engineering works and the meticulous work of detecting and eliminating irregular discharges, what is expected is that the various affected segments will be involved, such as nurserymen, shellfish collectors, industry, tourism operators, government entities and civil society", says the Amillion.

António Pina, Mayor of Olhão and of the Board of Directors of Ambiolhão, considers that “the Ria is a source of livelihood for many families from Olhão. The pollution that is still seen in these waters causes constraints for the activity of these workers who are part of the culture of Olhano».

«In addition, Olhão is strongly committed to quality and environmental tourism. Solving this problem is a priority for the Municipality and strengthening, communicating and monitoring actions aimed at this purpose with the involvement of everyone was the inspiration for the creation of this program that unifies everything we do so that our ria is better every day for the people of Olho and for visitors from all over who visit us and are enchanted by this natural heritage», he adds.

Ambiolhão adds that, while the program lasts, it will make known through its social networks, internet and social communication all the gains provided.

«Knowing the problem and the initiatives defined to face it is very important to create a critical mass and knowledge about the need for a clean and even more beautiful estuary than it already is», concludes engineer Clarisse Albino, one of the technical managers for the actions of the program.
