Portimão will host the first edition of the Dias da Percussion Festival and «fill the city with contagious rhythms» between the 25th and 27th of June.

The shows will take place in various cultural spaces in Portimão, including TEMPO – Portimão Municipal Theater and the Portimão Museum, but also “in dialogue with the municipality's public spaces, such as the historic center and the riverside area of Portimão, Praia da Rocha and the center of the village of Alvor», according to the Municipality of Portimão.

The event will bring together «percussionists of national and international renown, among which Vasco Ramalho and Nuno Aroso (marimba and vibraphone), Eduardo Cardinho (vibraphone), Marcos Cavaleiro (drums), Sérgio Almeida (African percussion), Bomboémia – Grupo de Percussion from the University of Minho (Portuguese-Brazilian percussion), João Guimarães Grupo (directed by João Guimarães on saxophone) and the duo Isabel Vaz (cello) and Vasco Dantas (piano)».

The idea is that these protagonists «establish a dialogue with artists residing in the Algarve region, especially students of the integrated course and the professional course of Jazz at the Bemposta Schools Group».

From the Portimão 2021 Percussion Days program, which can be consulted in full here, the municipality highlights four concerts that show «the variety and richness of the percussion world, from contemporary music to classical music, including jazz».

The musical commission for the festival to composer João Pedro Oliveira, who will premiere the work “In the House of the Glass King”, with Nuno Aroso, Vasco Ramalho and the Algarve Contemporary Percussion Group, formed by young percussionists from the region, is one of the initiatives in focus.

The municipality also highlights the «premier of an unlikely musical work for marimba and sardinephone, under the Cultural Development Fund of the Ministry of Culture, with direction and interpretation by Vasco Ramalho, composition by Tiago Cutileiro, which will have the canning industry of Portimão as its main creative inspiration».

In addition to the concerts, the event will feature an online conversation «as a pre-event theme, which aims to reflect on all the challenges inherent in the creation and programming of contemporary percussion in Portugal today».

The conversation will be mediated by the artistic direction of the festival, with the participation of several guest artists, programmers and composers.

The public can also count on parades starring Bomboémia, «in addition to four workshops and master classes in percussion, especially aimed at children and youth».

This is a project by O Corvo ea Raposa Associação Cultural, supported by the Directorate-General for the Arts, the Programming and Public Development axis, with the Municipality of Portimão as a strategic partner.

The event also has the support of the Bemposta Schools Group, the Parish Councils of Portimão and Alvor, as well as Antena2 and Rádio Portimão, as media partners.
