The Loulé City Council allocated around 260 thousand euros in support to 23 cultural and recreational associations and collectivities in the municipality, through annual program contracts, which were recently signed.

With this support, the municipality intends to «promote the dynamics of cultural activity in the territory, which has about two dozen associations dedicated to various areas such as theater, dance, music, performing arts, plastic arts, heritage , ethnography, folklore, among others' (see full list of beneficiaries below).

"This is direct support so that these entities can develop a diversified and decentralized program, which takes place in the various geographical stages - parishes -, based on productions that focus not only on simple enjoyment by the spectators, but also on training of the public”, described the Chamber of Loulé.

The criteria for granting support are «the years of existence and the respective history of the association, the status of public utility, the number of people involved in voluntary work, the consonance between the objectives of the program or cultural project and the needs of the council, the development of activities with a view to social inclusion, fostering the interest of children and young people or contributing to training and artistic creation and enhancement of the municipality's heritage».

"At a particularly difficult time for culture, which has seen its activity be heavily penalized by successive restrictions and general confinement of society, this support gains particular importance for the recovery of the sector at the local level", believes the Loulé local authority.

Vítor Aleixo, Mayor of Loulé, left a word of hope to local cultural agents, at the signing ceremony of the program contracts, and launched the idea that the pandemic could be a source of inspiration for «creative processes and for an incursion and reflection on these very strange times we live in».

“Be it in the area of theatre, dance, writing, conversations, there is so much that can be done on the cultural level regarding these times”, he stressed.

Highlighting the role of the «creative family of the council» in the construction of a «healthy community», the mayor left an appeal to these cultural agents: «Involve more and more people, commit themselves and remain passionate and supportive of our council».
